David completed a BA (Honours) European Business degree, at the University of Leicester, which included one year studying at the University of Catania, Sicily, as part of a languages programme. This developed his interest in the field of Business and Economics inspiring his postgraduate certificate in teaching. After several years of teaching both subjects in the UK, he moved into senior leadership positions in two UK schools and enjoyed being a member of the Equality and Diversity Forum, an organisation working on equality, human rights and social justice issues. David has achieved an MSc in Education and Training Management, and holds the National Professional Qualification for Head Teachers. In addition, he is a certified School Inspector and a Council of International Schools Evaluator.

What is the organizational structure of the school?
The Head of School, David Hutson, has an experienced team sharing the strategic vision for the school including Head of Lower, Middle and High schools, PYP, MYP and DP coordinators alongside a Head of Quest. Master teachers assist with teacher development.
Who is the Head of School of Dwight School Dubai?
David Hutson is our Head of School. David has been a passionate educator for 20 years, starting as a Business and Economics teacher, before moving into senior leadership positions in two UK schools. In 2011, he moved to Abu Dhabi to join an international school, in its foundation year, as Vice Principal. David then spent six successful years at the same school as the Principal.

Dwight School has a heritage that dates back almost 150 years and is owned by the Spahn family who have worked with the school for 50 years. Alumni of Dwight schools internationally, includes: John Williams, Truman Capote, Vin Diesel, Michael Mansfield QC, Ray Davies CBE and a “who’s who” of notable figures from politics, the Performing Arts, business, sports and the Sciences worldwide. Dwight was the first school to offer the complete IB curriculum in the US and as a result has a special place in the historic evolution of the International Baccalaureate curriculum worldwide. Dwight Schools in New York and London were two of only six original schools (selected from the then 3,700 IB World Schools) to be IB “Open World” accredited to pilot on-line IB course provision worldwide.

How do you use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within the school?
ICT is fully embedded in the curriculum in all phases and extends beyond just access to laptops, tablets and iPads. Learning areas are flexible in designation and use to reflect Dwight’s innovative approaches to learning in that we may offer for example, a focus on Robotics or coding or design for a set period of time, with a view to responding to students’ needs and wants alongside important and ever changing technological developments. We aim for every student to enjoy a personalized journey during their time with us and for them have a role in shaping their learning styles and environments.
Innovation is prominent in Dwight Schools. The Spark Tank is a signature part of this innovative programming and includes a think tank approach to nurturing innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership in Dwight’s community. The think tank encourages students to take ideas they have through development stages such as planning, design and production, before presenting them to a panel of relevant industry professionals for feedback.

What are the entry requirements and how can parents apply?
Dwight School Dubai carries out entrance testing to provide benchmarks to measure student progress and to ensure that students have been appropriately placed.
We make appropriate grade placements based on age, as well as academic, social and emotional development. Each new student from ages 3 through 18 is asked to complete appropriate assessments and may be asked to return for additional testing or interviewing.
Dwight closely observes and monitors grade placement for all new students to ensure that they have been appropriately placed. These admission requirements are not based on a set academic benchmark as we consider each child’s suitability carefully based on several aspects, including previous reports, personal strengths as well as academic results to date. This case by case approach ensures that every applicant is fairly considered and is given equal opportunity to be at Dwight.

What is the teacher/pupil ratio ?
In Prek and KG2, classes have a maximum of 20 pupils.
In Grades 1 to 12, classes have a maximum of 24 pupils.
All classes have an appropriate adult/pupil balance and are supported by a team of learning assistants and specialist teachers.
